Week 1 · The Body Budget

Why the body sets the wave height

Speed

Think about the last reaction you regretted. You can probably name the trigger — the message, the meeting, the comment. Now the harder question: what shape was your body in when it landed? Almost nobody can answer that one. We track our triggers and ignore our hardware. Today: how five ordinary areas of body upkeep quietly set the size of your reactions.

Same trigger, different floor

Here's the picture this program stands on. Same trigger, two days. On one day it lands on a rested, fed, well body — the wave stays small. On the other, the same trigger lands on a drained body — and the wave is twice the size. The trigger didn't change. The floor it landed on did.

DBT bundles this material into five body-care skills under one label — the PLEASE skills. The label matters less than the list, so we'll call them what they are: illness, meals, substances, sleep, movement. Five areas, one budget.

Sleep — the biggest lever

Deep in your brain sits an alarm system, and at the front, a brake that keeps it in proportion. Lose sleep and both move against you: in lab studies, the alarm fired around sixty percent harder at the same images, while the brake's connection to it weakened. Louder alarm, thinner brake — before your day even starts.

Meals — the fastest factor

Your brain needs a steady fuel line, and a long gap reads, from the inside, like danger: shaky, irritable, primed to fire. Skip the midday meal, and by late afternoon a wave barely needs a spark.

Substances — the loan

Alcohol is the clearest case: the calm it lends in the evening gets repaid overnight — as thinner, choppier sleep in the second half of the night, and a higher anxiety baseline the next day. Yesterday's easiest hour becomes today's most reactive one.

Illness and pain — the running cost

A body fighting an infection, or carrying pain that isn't being treated, pays a constant background charge — and a system already paying fires sooner. Feeling unwell isn't a footnote. It's a factor.

None of this is about character

And none of it is opinion. Five drains, one budget — and starting tonight, your log measures yours. In two weeks, the chart won't show a stranger's data. It'll show your Tuesdays.
