Step 1 of 11
Week 1 · Understand the System

The window of tolerance

Speed

This session is the map the rest of the program rests on: your window of tolerance. Once you can see it, grounding, triggers, and sleep all have a place to sit. It needs nothing about what happened. It is a map of now.

The zone where you can cope

Picture a band running through the middle of your day. Inside it, you can feel things and still function. Upset but thinking. Tired but present. Stressed but steady. This band is your window of tolerance: the zone where life is workable. It is not calm all the time. It is coping — feelings move through, and you stay online.

After trauma, that window narrows. Things that never used to knock you sideways now do, because the survival system from last session keeps the edges on a hair-trigger.

The two edges

When you get pushed out of the window, you go one of two ways:

  • Over the top — hyper-arousal. Too much. Flooded, panicky, racing, angry, unable to sit still, heart pounding.
  • Under the bottom — hypo-arousal. Too little. Numb, foggy, shut down, far away, heavy, disconnected.

Both are out of the window. Both are the survival system protecting you, one by revving everything up, one by pulling the plug. Neither is you failing.

What the map gives you

Without the map, being flooded or numb feels like chaos with no handle. With it, you can locate yourself: "I'm over the top right now," or "I've dropped under." And once you can locate yourself, you know which way is back, toward the middle. The skills for coming down from too much and coming up from numb are different, which is exactly why naming where you are comes first.

Your daily check-in has been asking this all along — wound up, in-window, or numb. That is you learning the edges of your own window, one day at a time.

The goal, said plainly

We are not aiming to empty the window of hard feelings, and we are not processing the trauma to do it. We are widening the window and building the way back to the middle, so that more of your life is lived in the zone where you can cope. Steadier, more often. That is the whole aim.
