The panic cycle
If the alarm is harmless, one fair question remains: why does it keep firing? Today you get the answer, which is a loop with a handful of moving parts. Once you can see the loop, every week of this program is simply the removal of one part.
The inner loop: under a minute to full alarm
A panic attack is not random. It builds in a spiral you can map:
- A sensation. Often small: a heart flutter, a shallow breath, a wave of warmth. Bodies produce blips like this all day.
- A catastrophic thought. The mind reads danger into it: heart attack. Can't breathe. Losing my mind.
- Fear. The thought frightens you, and fear releases adrenaline.
- A stronger sensation. Adrenaline makes your heart pound harder and your breath come faster, which seems to confirm the thought.
- Certainty. The louder the body, the truer the catastrophe feels. Around and around, and the circle can close in under a minute.
Notice what powers the loop. A sensation starts it, but the interpretation drives it: the alarm is being triggered by your reading of your own body. That is the single most important fact in this program, because interpretations can be changed.
The outer loop: how panic colonizes a life
Between attacks, three habits keep the system primed:
- Fear of fear. You start dreading the next attack, which keeps baseline adrenaline high and makes attacks more likely.
- Body-scanning. You monitor your chest, your breath, your head. A scanned body always has something to find, and every finding is a normal blip handed to step one.
- Avoidance and escape. You leave when panic rises and steer around places it has visited. Each escape teaches the alarm that the place was dangerous and that you survived only because you left. The map shrinks, and the alarm grows more sensitive rather than less.
The trap
Everything you have been doing to cope (escaping, monitoring, avoiding) is completely understandable, and it is also what keeps the loop turning. Panic persists not because your alarm is broken but because the coping keeps re-teaching it that the false alarms are real.
We will not remove your coping until you have something better in its place. That is what the next five weeks are for.
