The false alarm

Today we read the blueprint of a panic attack. By the end of this session, every sensation in an attack will have a name, a job, and an explanation, because every one of them is your body doing something right.

The system that saves lives

Your body comes with an emergency system older than language: fight-or-flight. When your brain detects danger, it releases adrenaline, and within seconds your whole body reconfigures for survival. It has kept your ancestors alive for millions of years, and yours is in good working order.

A panic attack is that system firing when no danger is present. A false alarm. Everything you feel during an attack is a survival feature running as designed, at the wrong moment.

The blueprint, symptom by symptom

  • Your heart races to pump blood to the big muscles, so you can run or fight. A strong, fast heartbeat is a heart doing its job well; a sprinter's does the same at the starting line.
  • Your breathing quickens to load oxygen for action, and your chest feels tight because the muscles between your ribs have braced along with everything else.
  • You feel dizzy or unreal because the alarm has you breathing faster than your body needs, taking in oxygen you are not burning; the light head is the harmless side effect.
  • Your fingers tingle from that same fast breathing. Strange feeling, safe cause; we take this mechanism apart in session four.
  • Your muscles tense and tremble, your skin sweats — loaded with fuel, held ready, cooled in advance for the effort your body expects.

One system, one purpose, every symptom accounted for.

The claim that matters

Here is the sentence this program stands on: the alarm cannot hurt you. Adrenaline is a normal body chemical, and the surge is the same one you would get sprinting for a bus, felt while standing still. Your body breaks adrenaline down within minutes, which gives every attack one shape: it rises, it peaks, it ebbs. Your safety screen, and your doctor where symptoms needed checking, are what let us say this plainly: what you have is a false alarm, not a hidden illness.

An alarm this good at its job is hard to ignore; it is built to be, because that is what makes it useful in real danger. The task ahead is not to destroy it but to teach it when not to fire, and to teach you how to read it when it does.
